Sustainable Practices

Organic is so much more than just avoiding chemicals

While the USDA organic seal is a simple sign of a product grown in ways that protect the health of people and the plant, it’s also a sign that the farmers have worked within a strict matrix of regulations.

Organic farmers are able to produce beautiful crops without 700 chemicals and GMOs allowed in conventional farming and processing because we take the time to build a fertile, vibrant, and nutrient-dense ecosystem for our plants. This healthier ecosystem is better able to fend off pests and disease, which in turn enables us to avoid use of those 700 chemicals.

Hawks = Organic Farming?

In organic farming, we manage threats to our crops without harsh conventional chemicals. As you can imagine, the local birds love our blueberries as much as we do. So periodically, we bring in a falconer to help scare birds away and establish our farms as a no-fly zone for hungry birds.

What is Organic?

Certified organic products have been produced using cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that support the cycling of on-farm resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity in accordance with the USDA organic regulations.

This means that organic operations must maintain or enhance soil and water quality, while also conserving wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used
